[mɑːʃ], Dame (seit 1966) Edith Ngaio, neuseeländische Schriftstellerin, * Christchurch 23. 4. 1899, ✝ ebenda 18. 2. 1982. Nach dem Kunststudium in Canterbury arbeitete sie als Theaterregisseurin in London, später in Christchurch (zahlreiche Shakespeare-Inszenierungen). Viele ihrer Kriminalromane (zum Teil von ihr selbst dramatisiert) spielen im Theatermilieu, andere in ländlichen Gegenden Englands und Neuseelands. Ihre bekannteste Gestalt ist Inspektor Roderick Alleyn von Scotland Yard.
